The concept is to add seasonal accents to your regular decor scheme so that everything seems to fit. Subtle swaps and layered accents go a long way.
In my living room, I switch out my all-year-round throw pillows with those in fall textures and Halloween colors, e.g., velvet rust or soft black. I change out books with seasonal books, replace florals with dried branches or pampas grass, and put an elegant pumpkin or two on existing furniture without moving all the furniture around. In the bedroom, I will keep the bedding plain, but use a bat-shaped pillow or a warm-coloured throw to get the point across.
Designers such as Nate Berkus stress the value of personalization as opposed to perfection. He also says that decor should be a reflection of life and I think the changing of the seasons is the best way to demonstrate this approach. My home is a combination of my personal style and a few seasonal accents, which makes it feel lived-in as opposed to staged.
To go a step further, I would add a modular shelf or cart that would be a rotating decorative area. It is an intelligent solution that can be altered with each holiday and still have the actual home design.
